Usama Khan is a third-year medical student at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. He graduated cum laude from The Ohio State University, where he completed a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. Usama recently passed Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Exam and has begun his hospital rotations.
As an undergraduate, Usama took a variety of engineering courses where he learned skills like MATLab programming and SolidWorks 3D design. These pure engineering courses were paired well with his biomedical coursework, where he took specialized courses on topics such as cardiovascular engineering, tissue engineering, and biomaterials. Usama utilized his coursework during his senior capstone, where his team invented and fabricated a working wireless urine measurement device for hospital ICUs.
In addition to having a rigid backbone of analytical engineering classes, Usama took core courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and biochemistry to prepare for medical school. Because of his interest in medicine, Usama also worked as a research assistant in the Magalang Laboratory, where he conducted genetic research on sleep apnea. His abstract on sleep apnea detection was published in 2017.
Outside of class, Usama was the founder and president of Humanity First at OSU, a humanitarian student organization. Through Humanity First, Usama was able to give students the opportunity to volunteer at food banks, blood drives, and at their own fundraising events. Over the years Usama gained a strong perspective on organization and leadership.
Since his admission into medical school, Usama has guided undergraduate students through the pre-med process as well as the application process. He has helped students perfect their personal statements and applications to maximize their potential for admissions; allowing them to achieve their dreams of contributing to humanity through the art of medicine.
